| Coastal Art Project | The Hiketa Fishing Port Breakwater in Higashi-Kagawa City was once adorned with a mural by Celia Béjar Ben, a Spanish artist who was a student at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago at the time. Her artwork, inspired by spirits of the sea, had gradually faded due to exposure to wind, rain, and sunlight. Rather than letting it disappear, the Higashi-Kagawa Coastal Art Project was launched. In addition to restoring the original mural, artists from both within and beyond the prefecture were invited to create new pieces, transforming this ocean-view spot into an open-air gallery. Today, the breakwater is decorated with whimsical illustrations, bold calligraphy, and vibrant pop art, offering visitors a truly unique and artistic seaside experience. |
