Shimanami Kaido

Shimanami Kaido
Cycle the blue route linking islands and bridges.
The Setouchi Shimanami Kaido is an approximately 60-kilometer route connecting Imabari in Ehime Prefecture with Onomichi in Hiroshima Prefecture, linking islands across the Seto Inland Sea by bridge. In addition to driving, visitors can use the dedicated cycling and pedestrian paths alongside the bridges to experience the island-dotted scenery and local life up close.

1. Take in the Seto Inland Sea from the bridges
From the cycling and pedestrian paths alongside the bridges, enjoy an open view over the water and the layered island scenery unique to the Seto Inland Sea.
2. Choose a cycling distance that suits you
You do not have to ride the entire route: rent a bicycle to explore just one section or a single island. Bicycle tolls are waived through March 31, 2028.
3. Discover each island’s culture and flavors
Each island offers something different, from shrines, viewpoints, and port towns to citrus fruit and fresh seafood. Take time to stop along the way and enjoy more than the journey itself.

Quick access guide
By car
The main entrances are Imabari IC on the Imabari side and Nishiseto-Onomichi IC on the Onomichi side. Some island interchanges allow entry or exit only in certain directions, so check your route in advance.
By public transportation
The main gateways are JR Imabari Station on the Imabari side and JR Onomichi Station on the Onomichi side. Local buses, highway buses, and ferries can be combined to reach the islands.

Nearby attractions
・Kirosan Observatory Park
This viewpoint high above Oshima offers sweeping views of the Kurushima Kaikyo Bridge and the Seto Inland Sea. Allow plenty of time to enjoy the changing expressions of sea and sky.
・Oyamazumi Shrine
A historic shrine on Omishima. Its quiet grounds and long history offer a rewarding introduction to the island’s culture.
・Imabari Castle
Known for its seawater moat, this castle is an easy stop before or after traveling the Imabari side of the route. Combine it with a walk through central Imabari.

Shimanami Kaido Cycling

The bridges have dedicated cycling and pedestrian paths, allowing you to walk or ride while enjoying the sea breeze. Cycle between sky and sea with views of the blue sky, beautiful Seto Inland Sea, and the distinctive character of each island along the way. When a place catches your eye, stop your bicycle and take time to soak in the scenery.

Adults: ¥3,000 per day
Elementary school students and younger: ¥1,000 per day
Available for pickup and return at all terminals; multi-day rentals available
Kids’ bikes
Elementary school students and younger: ¥1,000 per day
Available for pickup at all terminals except Imabari Station; returnable at all terminals
Electric-assist bicycles
Adults: ¥4,000 per day
Available for pickup at six designated terminals and return at all terminals; multi-day rentals available
E-bike
Adults: ¥8,000 per day
Available at Onomichi Station, Imabari Itoyama, and Imabari Station; same-day return required
Tandem bicycles
Adults: ¥4,000 per day
Available at Imabari Itoyama, Ikuchijima 2, and Omishima; return to the pickup terminal on the same day
