This is a popular shrine, commonly known as Konpira-san. There is an extremely long staircase, consisting of 1,368 steps. At the bottom, there are cafes, teahouses, souvenir shops, udon shops and many other in this lively area. When you have ascended the staircase to the mid-way point (785 steps), you will find the Hongu, the center of the shrine.

Unpenji Summit Park, sitting on the crest of a hill 920m up, is a park with a spectacular view that stretches out beyond the ropeway for a 7-minute aerial walk. The Iya-no-Kazura-bashi in Miyoshi’s Nishi Iya Sanson weighs approximately 5 tonnes and is made of woven vine in the style of a traditional suspension bridge.

Biwa Waterfall

This waterfall, approximately 40 meters high, is said to have been named after a legend in which Heike fugitives, longing for the capital of Kyoto, played the biwa (a traditional lute) here to console one another in their solitude. This deeply carved V-shaped gorge is known as “Hinoji Gorge” due to its resemblance to the Japanese hiragana character “ひ (hi).” In autumn, the entire valley— from the bottom to the peaks— is covered in vibrant autumn foliage, creating a breathtaking view.

This statue of a “Peeing Boy” was created based on a local legend in which children and travelers would test their courage by standing on the edge of a cliff. The statue stands atop a rock on a steep cliff along the Iya River, with a 200-meter drop to the valley floor below.
