Originating from the Mediterranean coast and the Canary Islands, this flower traveled through Asia Minor into China. It is said to have come to Japan from China in the early Heian era (794-1185BCE.) Currenty, the Japanese Narcissus can be found west of the Kanto area in coastal areas of Shikoku and Kyushu. Its main blooming period is early spring and is one of Japan's iconic spring flowers.

A flowering tree native to China, the plum blossom is said to have traveled to Japan through the Korean Peninsula. Though it is unclear when this actually happened, the plum blossom's presence in the text of Japan's oldest poetry collection, the Manyoshu, indicates that it was widely cultivated as early as the Nara period (710-794BCE.) Taking care of the tree year-round, even outside of flowering periods, also contributes to the plum's popularity.

Rapeseed spread from its original home along the Meditteranean coast and blooms in white, yellow, and purple varieties. Those grown specifically for ornamental purposes are known for particularly beautiful blossoms, and they are grown all across Japan. Before blooming, the stems, leaves, and sometimes buds can be enjoyed in a culinary capacity. Dishes made with rapeseed are characteristically bittersweet. 

A perennial with about 20 native species known in Europe/Western Asia and one in China, the Christmas Rose is a worldwide favorite. It earned the name "Christmas Rose" because it blooms in the depths of winter. Some species bloom around April, and these are known in England as "Lenten Roses".

Twent-five to thirty species of narcissus can be found in the Meditteranean coastal region, and one species can be found growing wild in Japan. There are six petals and sepals to each flower, which flare out around the corona. The shape of the corona varies between species, and its colors vary from yellow, orange, pink, etc., which contribute to this diverse flower's appeal.
